Offshore wind capacity is developing in the country. The government is taking steps in order to tap the potential from the vast coastline that India has.
The information was given by R.K Singh, Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy in the written reply in Rajya Sabha on 7th December 2021.
The government has issued Guidelines for Offshore Power Assessment Studies and Surveys’, because of these now private investors will be able to carry out resource assessments on their own.
The government floated an Expression of Interest in 2018 for the development of an offshore wind energy project. This project is off the coast of Gujarat, wherein 35 developers participated. Ministry consulted all the participants for structuring the bidding process.
The government has conducted several stakeholders’ consultation meetings relating to different aspects of offshore wind energy development.
India has a very long 7,600kms coastline with water on the 3 sides. Till now India has not been able to harness energy from renewable sources. The government is trying its best to tap into the source.
