Kolkata port’s first solar power plant has been inaugurated in Haldia in the Purba Medinipur district. The inauguration was done by the Union Shipping Minister of India Mr Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday, 08th October 2021.

The First Solar Power plant can generate a capacity of 1MW generating 1.4 million units/year and will be used to power 1400 staff quarters in Haldia port. This plant is built at a cost of 6.6 crores. Every year this plant will save Rs 70 lakh.

This is the first step towards green energy adoption and joining the rest of the county in the commitment to National Solar Mission and reduce a significant amount of carbon footprint and help achieve balance in the environment.

Besides, the minister also unveiled an illumination and surveillance system in the port area for better monitoring of cargo-handling operations. During his two-day visit, Sonowal unveiled projects worth over Rs 350 crore at Haldia and Kolkata docks.
